“Land of Make-Believe” Shirt Designs

In one of my most serendipitous commission landings, I posted a sketch sheet of Daniel Striped Tiger to my Instagram page after seeing the Fred Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and one day later, I received an email from Steel City Apparel asking if I’d like to illustrate some shirts for a Mister Rogers collaboration! The two final designs we went with, Daniel & X The Owl, were completed in 2018, but went unreleased until summer 2020.

When the designs were finally released in the summer of 2020, I was over halfway done with my art degree—suffice it to say, I had grown a lot as an artist and wasn’t satisfied with the quality of my earlier work. After sitting on the idea for a few years, I decided to redraw both just as a little personal project—perhaps just to have something genuinely good to show alongside this credit in my portfolio. I did one pass with more basic colors like what Steel City did with the official shirts, but also one with a more fully-realized color job. I love the latter immensely!
